Visionspring's sketchbook of learning

Hi there! I'll use this thread for any unfinished tidbits, messy sketches and WIPs. Here's a massive dump, then I'll continue to add more slowly.

As usual, need to really work on the hands and feet....But now I got hold of the Loomis books, which will enable world domination! And other such mystical abilities.

Pan's Labyrinth was so cool! But overwhelmingly sad too... Done with acrylics, Prismacolour pencil, black pen....and some other stuff that was lying within arm's reach -

 SO MANY NAKED LADIES!!!

heh, no i'm kidding............

.......

but seriously, nice work, i assume the big pages of nudes are from figure drawing classes?
the one of the faun dude from pans labyrinth is really nice, i like the lighting, its all glowy or something.
the painter portraits and stuff are cool too. i like the one to the left of the zombie girls, the colours seem stronger then most of the others. the demon lady with the lion kicks. and the chick with the lip ring at the end of that post is really nice too.

coolness keep up the good work! looking forward to OCing with you sometime

awesome progress! i love the looseness of the texture and stuff on her dress. the face looks very natural and the skin tones are very nice. i got a couple crits, if you want em :P

the necklace thing at the moment looks a little like its a picture stuck on there rather then a real object resting on her chest??? thats a really hard thing to fix, but maybe the edges are too sharp? or maybe you could add a little bit of a cast shadow on her chest?
her pointing arm looks a little tube like at the moment, like the anatomy is over simplified, try get some reference.

and last but not least the (this is more a suggestion) it could be nice to have a more definite light source, its a little ambiguous and very soft at the moment. i think once you add in the magical sign you can do something really cool with the lighting if you want.

anyway, very nice so far, keep working on it! its looking great :D

Hi there! Thanks for the crits, I was after some. Why angst over what you think might look off, when you can post it online and have a fresh pair of eyes pick up stuff immediately? :P

I agree about the jewelry, I think its a bit too sharp and defined at this point - Maybe I'll soften it up a bit and try to make it fit in with the lighting a bit? Also i'll photograph my arms to get some good reference. I'm also going to make the hat smaller, like how it was in the initial sketch.

Thanks for taking the time to critique! I really appreciate it :)

AWESOME LINES!
the one on the right especially, her head and hands seem like they might be a little big, which makes the body looks small, but the pose if very believable and really wonderful lines :D :D :D

great work on the portrait too, you fixed up the necklace very well.

That's an interesting change in style for you: I adore the top right image, it looks like an advertisement from the 50s, for razorblades or something. Lightrazors maybe? You've really enhanced the masculine features with appropriate brushstrokes.

N >> I have come to the conclusion that old men are SO FUN to paint....they are heaps easier coz you can have more fun with the creases and planes of the face. I find young female faces so hard, because the current standard of beauty means that a certain level of flawlessness is only acceptable.

Need to vary my lines/strokes more, argh...I'm not in a drawing mood today :(

hey, hows it :). Your stuff is pretty good, i definatley can sense that your not a "5 min artist" and truly enjoy creating art and that was probably the best thing about meeting ya the other day, nothing pisses me off more than being around people who say "drawing is more like a hobby to them".

Couple crits that may help ya out is watch your line weight, there should be a balance between the outline and shading or else your sketch ends up looking flat.Another crit is being too vague with shading can really destroy the overall look of a sketch, observe and be precise and confident when you touch pencil to paper.

That quick sketch of that dude directly in the center of your latest sketches is my favorite, beautiful sketch.

hope that helps mate ;)
